Pig’s Teeth Celestite Fine Mineral Specimen

$185.00

Sakoany Deposit, Mahajanga Province, Madagascar

Description

A sculptural and highly dimensional specimen of celestite displaying the rare “pig’s teeth” crystal habit for which it is famously named for.

The interior cavity is lined with elongated, sharply terminated celestite crystals radiating inward in dense, interlocking clusters. The crystals range from translucent to softly icy blue, with excellent luster and strong geometric presence.

Several larger spear-like terminations anchor the composition, while smaller, glassy crystals create texture and sparkle between them. The structure feels architectural — layered and angular — yet balanced and cohesive.

This is a strong cabinet specimen with both visual impact and textbook habit.

Dimensions & Weight

4” x 3.25” x 1.5”
707 grams

Collector’s Notes

“Pig’s teeth” celestite is a well-known trade name for a rare formation of celestite. It gets its name for the elongated, tapered crystal habit that resembles rows of small, pointed teeth lining a cavity.

Madagascar’s Sakoany deposit is the only modern source of this formation style. These crystals form in sedimentary evaporite environments where strontium-rich fluids precipitated celestite within voids.

This specimen preserves:

• Strong elongated crystal habit
• Sharp terminations
• Balanced cavity structure
• Natural icy blue coloration

Well-formed pig’s teeth examples with good termination integrity and aesthetic cavity depth remain highly collectible.

Investment Consideration

Pig’s teeth celestite from Madagascar has remained consistently collectible due to its rare and distinctive crystal habit. While celestite is not rare as a species, Pig’s teeth celestite, with its unique internal architecture,  is much more sought after in more selective markets.

Pieces that clearly demonstrate textbook habit, clean terminations, and sculptural presence generally hold steady demand within the fine mineral community.

Highlights

• Rare pig’s teeth crystal habit
• Madagascar locality
• Large cabinet specimen
• Icy blue translucency
• Strong cabinet presence
• Excellent internal structure

Mineralogy

Celestite (SrSO₄) is a strontium sulfate mineral commonly formed in evaporite and sedimentary environments. The blue coloration results from trace impurities and structural light interaction.

The “pig’s teeth” habit represents elongated prismatic growth within cavities, where crystal faces developed freely into open space.

Madagascar material is particularly known for producing dense cavity clusters with well-formed terminations.
