A Note From the Author

This book is about minerals, but it is also about something much bigger: curiosity, discovery, and the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to explore their world.

I created this activity book from a very personal place. I have dyslexia, and after experiencing a traumatic brain injury, I spent a great deal of time in physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

These therapies taught me a lot about perseverance. It also reminded me that the way something is designed can make the difference between someone feeling included and someone feeling left behind.

During my recovery, I saw children facing challenges that no child should ever have to face. I saw kids working incredibly hard to do things that other people take for granted. I saw their determination, their humor, their frustration, their curiosity, and, more than anything, their bravery.

Those children are big reason why this book exists.

They helped inspire me to create something meaningful—something that could be fun, educational, engaging, and accessible to as many people as possible. I wanted to make a book where children could learn at their own pace, interact with activities in different ways, and feel encouraged to keep exploring.

Because every child deserves to explore their world free from limitations.

That belief is especially important to me when it comes to rock and mineral collecting. You don't have to be a scientist. You don't have to climb mountains, hike for miles, or fit anyone's idea of what a "rockhound" looks like. You can explore your own backyard, visit a mineral show, admire specimens in a museum, learn from books, collect gems and minerals, or simply wonder how something so extraordinary formed inside the Earth.

Rock collecting is for everyone.

There is no right age, ability, background, or way to enjoy it. The Earth has spent millions—and sometimes billions—of years creating incredible things for us to discover. Curiosity is all you need to begin.

My hope is that somewhere in these pages, every child finds something that makes them curious. Something that makes them look a little closer. Something that makes them ask another question.

And most of all, something that reminds them that the world is theirs to explore.
