Rare Durango Selenite with Iron Oxide Inclusions Fine Mineral Specimen
Description
A striking collector-grade selenite crystal from Durango, Mexico, combining glassy transparency with dramatic internal architecture and warm, earthy mineral inclusions.
This elongated crystal is exceptionally expressive. Its clear gypsum body reveals an intricate network of internal growth features, geometric cleavage patterns, fine parallel striations, and layered crystalline structures that seem to float throughout the specimen. Viewed from different angles, these internal features catch and redirect the light, creating an ethereal appearance within the crystal.
Warm golden-orange to rust-brown iron oxide inclusions provide a beautiful contrast against the crystal clear selenite. The iron-rich material is especially concentrated along portions of the crystal's base, where it creates richly textured mineral landscapes within and upon the crystal.
One of the most captivating aspects of this specimen is its depth. Through the clearer windows, you can see multiple generations of internal features seemingly suspended at different levels within the crystal. The result is a specimen that changes considerably as it is rotated, revealing new geometric patterns, reflective planes, inclusions, and hidden details from every angle.
Despite its impressive clarity, this is anything but a simple clear selenite crystal. It is a wonderfully complex example of the mineralogical character that makes Durango selenite so collectible.
Dimensions & Weight
Dimensions: 8.5”x2”x1.75”
Weight: 624g
Metaphysical Properties
In metaphysical traditions, selenite is associated with clarity, purification, peace, and energetic cleansing. It is commonly used to create a calm atmosphere and is believed to help clear stagnant energy from spaces and other stones.
Iron-bearing minerals are traditionally associated with grounding, strength, stability, and connection to the earth. Together, the transparent selenite and earthy iron-rich inclusions make this specimen symbolically interesting—a combination of clarity and grounding, lightness and stability.
Metaphysical properties are based on spiritual traditions and are not scientifically established.
Collector’s Notes
Durango, Mexico is renowned among mineral collectors for producing impressive gypsum crystals with exceptional clarity, elongated habits, complex internal structures, and mineral inclusions. Specimens from the region can preserve remarkable evidence of their growth environment within otherwise transparent crystals.
This piece showcases that contrast beautifully: water-clear crystalline areas reveal an entire landscape of internal structures while earthy iron-rich material records the mineral environment in which the crystal developed.
Care
Selenite is a very soft and delicate mineral. Handle carefully and avoid exposure to water, which can damage gypsum. Clean only with a soft, dry brush or cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners and ultrasonic cleaning.
Highlights
Famous Durango, Mexico selenite
Excellent transparency
Dramatic internal geometric growth and cleavage features
Glassy luster
Golden-orange and rust-brown iron oxide inclusions
Natural iron-rich cavities and textured areas
Extremely collectible
Strong contrast between pristine colorless gypsum and earthy mineralization
Highly dimensional specimen with dramatically different views from each side
Excellent display piece for collectors who appreciate unusual internal crystal architecture
Mineralogy
Mineral: Gypsum — Selenite variety
Chemical Formula: CaSO₄·2H₂O
Crystal System: Monoclinic
Luster: Vitreous to pearly
Transparency: Transparent to translucent
Mohs Hardness: 2
Locality: Durango, Mexico
Selenite is the transparent, well-crystallized variety of gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulfate mineral. Gypsum is extremely soft, registering only 2 on the Mohs scale, and possesses perfect cleavage. This combination can produce the extraordinary internal planar and geometric features visible throughout this specimen.
The warm orange-brown coloration is associated with iron oxide mineralization, creating natural staining and inclusions without obscuring the crystal's remarkable transparency.
