Black Tourmaline in Quartz — Minas Gerais, Brazil

$82.00

Locality: Araçuaí / Conselheiro Pena pegmatite district, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Description

A striking and highly expressive example of black tourmaline (schorl) suspended within translucent quartz, this specimen showcases a dense network of needle-like inclusions radiating in multiple directions throughout the crystal body. The contrast between the glassy quartz and the dark, sharply defined tourmaline creates a layered, almost architectural interior—one that reveals new details with every shift in light.

The upper portion features a natural, reflective surface with exceptional luster, catching light in a way that enhances both depth and dimensionality.

This is a piece that rewards close inspection—equally compelling from a distance and under magnification.

Dimensions & Weight

4” x 2.5” x 1.5”
409 grams

Metaphysical Properties

Black tourmaline in quartz is often associated with grounding and energetic clarity. The quartz is believed to amplify, while the tourmaline is thought to absorb and neutralize unwanted energy—making this combination a favorite for those seeking balance and protection.

Collector’s Notes

This is one of the clearest, nicest pieces of tourmaline in quartz I have ever encountered.

The  Conselheiro Pena pegmatite district produces a large portion of the world’s tourmalinated quartz, especially from complex pegmatites rich in quartz cores and tourmaline inclusions (Mindat)

Highlights

  • Exceptionally clear quartz

  • Dense, well-distributed needle inclusions—strong internal structure and visual complexity

  • Highly reflective, lustrous surface

  • Classic tourmalinated quartz from Minas Gerais, one of the world’s most important mineral-producing regions

  • Excellent cabinet-sized specimen with both aesthetic and educational value

  • Strong representation of pegmatitic formation processes in quartz

Mineralogy

Tourmalinated quartz forms in pegmatitic environments where boron-rich fluids allow tourmaline crystals to grow simultaneously with quartz. As quartz crystallizes, it encapsulates pre-existing or co-forming tourmaline needles, preserving them in place.

Minas Gerais is one of the most significant global sources for these formations, hosting complex pegmatites formed during ancient continental collisions. These environments are known for producing a wide range of mineral species, including tourmaline, beryl, and quartz in highly aesthetic combinations (GIA).
